The Los Angeles Museum of Art (LACMA) is housed on over twenty acres in the heart of L.A. between the ocean and downtown and is expecting some upcoming changes. Starting in 2018, LACMA is planning to undergo an extensive $600 million five-year renovation to revitalize the aging structures which house the current museum. The planned project will update the LACMA in order for the museum to take full advantage of modern technology and to continue ensuring the space remains an innovative resource for the community's residents and visitors for years to come.
This project will allow the LACMA to better meet the goal of its mission statement: "To serve the public through the collection, conservation, exhibition, and interpretation of significant works of art from a broad range of cultures and historical periods, and through the translation of these collections into meaningful educational, aesthetic, intellectual, and cultural experiences for the widest array of audiences."
What Can You Expect From the Renovation?
A few highlights of the project include:
- Over 368,000 square feet of state-of-the-art indoor space for exhibitions, classrooms and more.
- 2.5 acres of outdoor space for everyone in the community to enjoy.
- Integration of existing outdoor space and remaining LACMA buildings seamlessly with the new construction.
- A new Metro Purple Line subway directly across from the museum and will provide convenient access for all visitors.
The museum will remain partially open throughout the entire renovation project to allow access to some of LACMA's 130,000 unique works of art which are currently in the museum's permanent collection. If you want to see everything the museum offers, make sure to visit before the end of the summer since new construction is scheduled to begin this fall.
