Give Back This Winter
Volunteering is a great way for seniors to give back to their local community. If you’re looking for a way to stay active this winter, sharpen your skills and help others in need, try volunteering! Through volunteering, you can share your time and talents for the good of your community. By doing a little research, you can find a charity, organization or project that could use a little extra help this winter season.
At Beverly Hills Carmel, we recognize the importance of seniors staying connected to their community. Volunteering provides opportunities for seniors to improve their own lives while helping others in need. Here are some meaningful ways in which you can give back to your local community:
- Help organize or carry out activities for your local church, i.e., food drive, social events, community outreach, etc.
- Work with local veterans groups as a counselor, fundraiser or distributor of care packages
- Assist with reading programs for adults and children or help stock and organize shelves in a local library
- Tutor children in an after-school program or help organize kids’ sports teams
- Help distribute food boxes at a food bank or serve free meals to homeless individuals or needy families
By acting as mentors, retired seniors at Beverly Hills Carmel can fill a great need in the lives of children or teens from broken homes. Your help and guidance can make a positive difference in the life of a child or teen who is struggling. If you’re interested in mentoring young children (K-3rd grade), you can work with Experience Corp, an AARP program that helps place seniors in schools with needy students. Senior Corp is another mentoring program in need of senior volunteers. This program puts you in touch with educational facilities in need of tutors for school-age children. Through Senior Corp, you can also volunteer as a foster grandparent to kids with special needs.
Benefits of Volunteering
As a senior, you can greatly benefit from volunteering. Volunteering keeps you active, mentally and physically, as you interact with people of all ages and engage in a wide range of activities. Staying active can boost your health and wellbeing. Giving back to your community also makes you feel better about yourself as you’re making a contribution to society. At the same time, you’re making new friends and finding greater purpose and satisfaction in your retirement years.
By working with a group or organization that provides training and ongoing support for your volunteer activities, you can gain new talents and skills that can benefit you in the future. The more you learn, the more useful you can be in helping others in need.
